Meta Tags, Open Graph & Twitter Cards

Title Tag and Meta Description are the first elements a user sees in Google search results — before clicking on the page. An optimized title (max. 60 characters) and a precise description (max. 160 characters) directly boost click-through rates.

Open Graph Tags control how your page is displayed when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and other platforms — with title, description and preview image. Without OG tags, the platform decides what gets shown.

Twitter Cards work analogously to Open Graph, specifically for Twitter/X. With summary_large_image a large preview image is shown, which significantly increases engagement rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are meta tags and why do I need them? +

Meta tags are invisible HTML elements in the head section of a page that provide search engines and social media platforms with information about the page content. Title Tag and Meta Description appear directly in Google search results and significantly influence the click-through rate.

What is the difference between meta tags and Open Graph tags? +

Meta tags (Title, Description) are for search engines. Open Graph tags (og:title, og:image etc.) control how a page looks when shared on Facebook, LinkedIn or WhatsApp. Twitter Cards serve the same function specifically for Twitter/X.

How long should the meta description be? +

Google displays meta descriptions with approximately 155–160 characters, sometimes fewer on mobile devices. The Title Tag should be a maximum of 60 characters. Longer texts are truncated and displayed with "...".

What image size is recommended for Open Graph? +

The recommended format for Open Graph images is 1200×630 pixels at an aspect ratio of 1.91:1. The minimum size is 600×315 pixels. For Twitter Cards with summary_large_image, 1200×630 pixels also applies.

Are meta keywords still relevant for SEO? +

No, the meta keywords tag has been ignored by Google since 2009 and has no influence on rankings. Bing and other search engines also do not evaluate it. What matters for SEO today is the Title Tag, Meta Description, structured data and the actual page content.
